It All Began With A "Cruise"

The Most Wonderful Dog Who Ever Owned Me!

Cruise was a very special dog. Actually, he was that once-in-a-lifetime dog that can never be equaled or replaced. He started out special right from the start—at Right Start Kennels. He was purchased as a speculation puppy by Jim Van Engen and a partner, Kurt Fleistner. Fleistner promised his wife a "cruise" when the pup was through training and sold. Hence, we have RSK's Smooth Sailing "Cruise".

He showed his tremendous marking ability very early in life, and I had the great fortune to be able to purchase him when he was 23 months old. He earned 30 derby points and a qualifying win while still in the Derby. He also achieved his Field Champion title during his 2-year-old year along with 20 all-age points! He achieved his Amateur Field Champion title shortly after his 3rd birthday. He qualified for 6 nationals and had amassed over 80 all-age points before his untimely death in January, 2006 at age 6-1/2.

While all of these achievements are remarkable, his most lasting and important achievements are the impressions he made on the hearts of all who were close to him.

He was mischievous and playful, loved squeaky toys, thought the best toy ever was a gallon-sized plastic milk jug! He couldn't be still when you scratched his belly—just thought it felt too good and had to squirm and wiggle. He never tired of chasing a ball or a bumper. But, when you stepped to the line, all the foolishness was gone and there was never a time I didn't think I could win a trial with him. These are the memories that will never be diminished. I belonged to him lock, stock and barrel, and I see him in his sons and daughters everywhere. Cruise has also proven himself as a sire. He has produced pups on the Derby list, QAA offspring, a Field Champion, and successful all-age competitors, in very limited breedings. His pups continue to excel today, and his legacy continues with FC WORTH-IT'S P T CRUISER.
